BSB's Pedestrian Bridge
Bridging Heritage and Modernity:
BSB's Pedestrian Bridge
In the heart of Bandar Seri Begawan (BSB), a new landmark has seamlessly blended function and aesthetics—an architectural asymmetrical steel arch pedestrian bridge with a stunning 43-meter clear span, free of any center pier. Nestled near the historic Lapau building and situated at the city’s bustling core, this bridge is more than just a passage; it is a symbol of innovative design and engineering excellence.
A Design That Stands Out
Recognizing the need for a bridge that complements its historic surroundings while providing practical functionality, the designers proposed a unique solution: a steel arch supporting the bridge deck, combined with a post-tensioned box girder. This elegant structure not only ensures the bridge’s strength and stability but also creates a visually striking silhouette against the cityscape.

Practical and Spacious
The bridge’s deck, 3200 in width, offers ample space for pedestrians and schoolchildren from Chung Hwa Middle School to cross the busy road safely and conveniently. The footbridge was designed as a 40m span tied arch formed from large diameter, steel, circular hollow sections with staircases on both ends ensure easy access, making it an indispensable part of daily commutes.

Overcoming Construction Challenges
Building in an urban environment often comes with its set of challenges, and this project was no exception. The site was laden with existing services, including telecommunication fiber optic cables several electrical cables and a 500-millimeter diameter water pipe. Relocating these utilities would have incurred exorbitant costs, so the construction team devised an ingenious solution: custom-designed foundations.
The foundations were tailored to fit the unique conditions of the site, resulting in oddly shaped and sized pile caps. This approach minimized disruption to the existing services, demonstrating a high level of adaptability and problem-solving. One unusual feature of the bridge is that the deck and arch will be transversely offset from each other due to the inclination of the arch.
A Beacon of Progress
The pedestrian bridge in BSB is more than just a crossing point; it is a testament to the harmonious blend of heritage and modernity. By addressing both aesthetic and practical considerations, this bridge not only preserves the charm of its historic surroundings but also enhances the daily lives of its users.
In overcoming significant construction challenges, the project showcases the ingenuity and resourcefulness of contemporary engineering. It stands as a beacon of progress, illuminating the path forward for future infrastructure projects in urban settings.
